From the start, the Ultegra FD features a redesigned internal structure that incorporates Shimano’s InfinityXross technology. Its goal is to improve gear life for the long haul, where the cold-forged Hagane gear of the previous generation is updated with an improved tooth design that creates greater surface area that the drive and pinion gear mesh together with. The load placed on the gear teeth from reeling in a fish, lure, and overall general use is more efficiently distributed, mitigating stress points that would lead to pre-mature failure and overall wear.
Complimenting its InfinityXross technology, InfinityDrive technology further refines the smooth, effortless winding felt on the anglers end even under heavy reeling loads such as fighting a fish. Unlike the design of the past where the main shaft is supported by the pinion gear, it is instead supported by a new and unique low friction bushing that mitigates frictional resistance. The main shaft also undergoes a proprietary surface treatment and processing, reducing rotational torque drastically.
Protecting the vital internal components of the reel from water and other harsh containments, X-Protect focuses on a non-contact structure to not compromise the lightness of each handle turn. Both a conventional water-repellant treatment along with a labyrinth styled structure work together, shedding water away quickly and preventing it from penetrating.
